Classic furs don't go out of fashion. The new styles include different colors, leather insets and beads and crystals, but they still retain the tried-and-true lines that master furriers have used through the years.
"I buy fashion items, but mostly I buy classic coats. They don't ever go out of style," said Maria Leka, owner of Max Karpman Furs and Fashions in The Gables.
"We have younger customers that wear their fur with sneakers and jeans. Furs can be casual or dressed up. They can have an urban edge and be city chic, or you can walk the dog in your fur jacket," she said.
Leka said nothing is as warm as a fur coat, and furs can be re-used and re-worked for a different look. "And," she said, "when parts of the coat wear out - and that takes a lot of wear - we can make them into a beautiful fur throw."
Furs are dyed, sheared, shaved, laser etched, pieced and grooved, Leka said. "There are types and styles to fit anyone's taste." Dressed up or dressed down, nothing says "I've arrived" like a fur.
