Trash is a mirror of society. At first glance, there's just a huge crush of junk. Nothing stands out. It's just trash. But look closer. There is a certain symmetry in the stacks of cans, which ones filter to the top, which fall to the side. There is a softness and sheen to the old metal. It shows that well-worn and well-used is still beautiful. The edges are rounded and buffed. It is a shine that comes naturally, with no artifice. Some of the smaller pieces fall to the side, but they are still usable. Photographer T.J. Salsman takes us on a trash tour at Lake Area Recycling on South Sixth Street. There is beauty everywhere if you sit and look.
